I wrote this for my school newspaper that came out today. I would have done a review of a Cordalene show but I have an awful fear of the biffies in my grade and their teenybopper abilities. But you guys are mentioned in here so it's all relevant! (Thanks to Carla for giving me 'notes' on Phantom Planet the night before the deadline...)
Phantom Planet Plays in Philly
On November 9th, Phantom Planet played a sold out show at the Theatre of the Living Arts on South Street in Philadelphia. When the doors opened at 7:00, the line to get into the venue was already about half a block long; however, before Phantom Planet took the stage, two amazing opening bands performed.
Cordalene, a fairly well known local band that has released two EPs, performed with tones of energy. Cordalene was followed by Bee Lee, the Australian singer/songwriter whose melodic songs got the audience swaying back and forth. He played original songs from his album "Hey You, Yes You," but also threw in a few covers, including "Beautiful" by Christina Aguilere, and Lee succeeded in makng the song bearable!
After two hours, Phantom Planet took the stage and played a thirteen song set. Many songs were off their upcoming self-titled album, due out in January. During "Big Brat," the opening bands joined the group onstage for an indie rock sing-a-long of sorts.
One difference fans might have noticed from Phantom Planet's previous shows was its new drummer. No longer is Jason Schwartzman behind the drum riser, because Jeff Conrad has taken his place.
Jason, seen in such movies as Spun, Rushmore and Slackers, quit the band earlier in the year to pursue his acting career. Despite being fairly new, Jeff did a great job. it's safe to say no fan went home disappointed.
