Ok, so a lot of you might not know this group too well, but Jamie and I have been on a bit of an XTC kick lately. He's been into the Oranges and Lemons and I've been into the best of 1978-83 and a sampler I got from the John Peel sessions that features live and BBC radio recordings. I reccommend both to anyone, and if you like ska-influenced stuff, then the early bits will be for you. If you like Beach-Boys style elaborate orchestrations, the later studio stuff will brian your wilson.

Well Joe, I'm not gonna touch your XTC comment, but instead say (since I'm not in town to tell you direct-like) that I saw Lost in Translation last night, and everyone need to listen to a lot more My Bloody Valentine. Except Billy Coregan, he's had his fill I believe. Sheild's new song ain't so bad either. See you soon. -m

Was Lost in Translation worth seeing?? I hear Sofia Coppala is really good but I've only seen parts of Virgin Suicides and her short film Lick the Star. I need some new movies to rent.

Haven't seen Lost in Translation yet, but the Virgin Suicides is incredible. Sofia Coppola is great --she just directed a video for the White Stripes!
If you like that (and you haven't seen them) check out Wes Anderson's movies. They're these great story films that really depend on the characters, but they're beautiful, too. He only made three movies, but they're all amazing: Bottle Rockets, Rushmore, and The Royal Tannenbaums. Just watched Tannenbaums again this week, and it's definitely the best of the three.
Now, back to the topic at hand: Essential albums. Skipping over the obvious stuff (Beatles, Stones, Led Zeppelin, etc), I've been on a Glam Rock kick recently, so I've doing to offer:
Brian Eno - Here Come the Warm Jets --probably the smartest and most interesting glam album ever made. The lyrics make less than no sense, but it sounds so good.
T Rex - Electric Warrior --Jerky and stompy and a whole lot of fun. Marc Bolan was a genius.
David Bowie - The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars --If you don't own it, buy a copy; it'll make your life more interesting.
